History of pottery in ceylon 


           With the transition of the ancient humans who lived in sri lanka from the hunting era to the era of domestic farming ,the background required for the making of pottery was created . At that time, people living along the river valleys could easily find the raw materials needed to make pottery . Archaeological excavations at the site pottery in those days.

            The oldest pottery found  in the country was found  in the  Dorawakakanda area. They are believed to be around 5300 years old. Excavations at Ranchamadama, Horton plains, Galpaya ,warana , pothana, Haldummulla, Ibbankatuwa and pomparippu have also uncovered prehistoric pottery .


The pottery production that took place in this country from prehistoric times was further developed due to the potters who come here at that time lived in various parts  of sri lanka and engaged in making  pottery . Hence , different pottery from different  eras has been found in excavations . The pottery found in various parts of sri lanka was classified by the historian shiran deraniyagala . According to his classification , the types of pottery found in this country can be stated as follow.

1. Time color tools.

2. Time red color tools.

3. Red color tools

4. Delicate red pots.

5. Red coated post.

6. Light red dark gray post.

7. Yellow painted post.

8. Designer containers.

9. Brown pots.


How the pottery industry is doing today....


                      Generation of people who have been involved in this industry since ancient times still live in different areas. To this day , they make a living by trading in pottery . Most of the pottery industry takes place in districts such as kegalle , Mathara, Gampaha and Galle.when you visit such an area , you will shops full of pottery .some of those who run such shops sell their wares while others go to the malls and sell their wares.




Types of clays used...

                         Two Types of kaolin clay and red used in the local pottery industry .of these , kaolin is formed by the deposition of clay in the digested piles. White kaolin clay is also used to refer to primary clay, residual clay and milk clay . In general, kaolin clay is more compact and stioky. Therefore minerals such as phosphor silica sand and quartz are mixed with clay in making products form them 

                        The kaolin clay is washed away with rainwater and deposited on both sides of rivers and dams. The clay thus deposited will eventually turn into red clay when combined with plant and animal chemicals . Red clay introduction other  names such as liquid and secondary clay are used. There are red clay deposits along the kelani and gin rivers as well as in areas such as  Bangadeniya, Anuradapura , kochchikade and  Aluthnuwara . Since red clay is naturally formulated to make products,there is no need to mix other minerals .
